Weekend Events

Below are some highlighted events planned for Alumni Weekend 2010. A full schedule of events will be posted this winter.

Alumni Procession and Convocation

The University bagpipe band leads the alumni procession through the quads to Rockefeller Memorial Chapel for the annual Alumni Convocation, which celebrates University tradition and extraordinary alumni and student achievement. Alumni who graduated 50 years ago will be inducted into the Alumni Emeriti.

University Picnic

Join alumni from across the University at this festive family affair held on the grounds of the Ratner Athletics Center. Student performers will entertain while face-painters and balloon artists engage the children. Come for good food and fun.

UnCommon Core

The UnCommon Core is an annual favorite at Alumni Weekend. Chicago faculty members and alumni lead discussions on a variety of engaging intellectual topics. Past UnCommon Core sessions explored topics as varied as:

  • Biodiversity in Botany Pond
  • From the Midway to the Beltway: What Influence Does the University of Chicago Now Have on Washington?
  • Exploring the Universe from the South Pole
  • How to Know a Poem When You See (or Hear) One
  • Sibling Rivalries: Judaism, Christianity, Islam
  • The Quads Must Be Crazy: Messages Found in the University of Chicago Magazine

Special programs are offered for families with children. Visit our Web page this winter for updates on who will be leading the UnCommon Core classes in 2010.

ChicaGO Party

Weekend festivities culminate in the annual University gala on Saturday night.  A ten-piece orchestra sets the stage for dancing the night away. The ticket price includes a reception and dessert buffet and drink tickets.

99th Annual Interfraternity Sing

Fraternities, sororities, and their alumni gather for an annual song competition. This is the longest running IF Sing in the country and brings together more than 800 alumni, guests, sorority sisters and fraternity brothers to compete for the coveted awards.
