2017: Alumni Service Award

Vincenzo Barbetta, AB’99, MBA’05

  • Former President, UChicago LGBT Alumni Network; Current San Francisco Metro Chair

San Francisco, California

As one of the founding members of the LGBT Alumni Network, Vincenzo applied a deliberate, disciplined, and collaborative leadership style to strengthen bonds between LGBT alumni and between those alumni and the University. During his tenure as President, he and the amazing board of directors/Steering Committee grew the network to a 1,000+-member affinity group between 2008 and 2014. In this process, the group pioneered several aspects of the chapter model now used to organize affinity groups nationally and globally. Vincenzo also led the Steering Committee in raising approximately $30,000 (from an original goal of $25,000) for the Office of LGBTQ Student Life in 2011-2012. Nearly 400 members contributed to that inaugural campaign.

Vincenzo’s leadership for the group was twofold: first, he wanted alumni to remain connected to the academic work happening on campus, and second, he ensured that the group had a social mission. This message was shared with all volunteers recruited to the leadership board as the affinity group reached alumni as far away as Europe and Asia. Additionally, Vincenzo makes himself readily available to other alumni volunteers and leaders as a mentor for the Alumni Association.

Vincenzo currently serves as the LGBT Affinity Group metro chair in San Francisco. From 2003 to 2010 Vincenzo volunteered for the Alumni Club of Chicago (UC2MC) in leadership roles such as Treasurer and Vice President. Additionally, he received the Dean’s Award of Distinction in 2005 upon his graduation from Chicago Booth.
