Create your future legacy and help advance the University today.

Bernie’s Bequest Challenge is a limited gift opportunity* that generates a cash donation for qualified donors who document new or increased bequests to the University of Chicago.

Now your estate gift can go even further toward sustaining the long-term future of the University. When you document a gift from your will or trust, or name the University as a beneficiary of a retirement account or insurance policy, your gift qualifies for Bernie’s Bequest Challenge: a 10 percent matching gift (up to $50,000) that will support the University’s most pressing needs.

For example, if you provide documentation of an eligible bequest of $100,000 to the University using the challenge form, Bernie will make an outright unrestricted gift of $10,000 now.

The more we know about potential gifts in the future, the better we can plan for the University’s financial health and ensure its excellence for generations to come.

What to Do

To take advantage of this exciting program, follow these steps:

  • Name the University in your will or trust or as a beneficiary of an IRA, life insurance policy, or financial account.
  • Choose a specific amount or a percentage of your estate.
  • Consult the Office of Gift Planning and your attorney for assistance with bequest language.
  • Complete the bequest challenge form and return it to us along with the required documentation.

If you’ve already named the University in your estate plans and haven’t yet let us know—or haven’t shared documentation—please use this occasion to do so. Bequest donors are thanked and honored through lifetime membership in the Phoenix Society.

*Some restrictions and criteria apply. Determination of final eligibility is at the discretion of the University. New or increased bequest intentions valued at $10,000 or more will qualify for the bequest challenge so long as matching funds remain. Donors may choose to structure their bequest gifts as unrestricted or to support specific areas or programs. Challenge funds are allocated to the University as unrestricted.
